On the bright side, isn't it neat how excited they are to get started on the next thing you have planned???!!! Gotta love those elementary students! :D

I used several of the strategies that others have mentioned. They
have always worked well with my students.

1. I posted charts listing materials and procedures for routines.
2. I wrote on the board when there was a new activity. (I would just start writing on the board not saying anything. It's amazing how that action will get everybody's attention.)
3. I would start all of my instructions with an attention signal and then say, "After
I say, 'Start,' you will..."
4. Many times I would give them a time limit.

Lots of structure with prompts seems to work well. I like Lee Canter's book, Classroom Management for Academic Success. It has lots of ready-made charts (that can be modified) for communicating expectations for transitions and routines. It's at Amazon.
