What makes a good principal? By pkjw

I hear so many horror stories about poor administrators. What do you think makes a principal really good? What ideas or activities has your principal done that you really liked?

I'll start...My current principal has an orientation at the school for all teachers new to the school. She gave us a "goody-bag" with supplies, a school shirt, a book and free lunch :D . She went through school policies and answered our questions in a low-key forum. It was wonderful. I have been at two other school where I was "thrown to the wolves" when school opened. This was a nice change.
