I agree with Mel for both girls... also- I think that you probably should have them read their own stuff if there is anyway you can swing it. It probably makes the older one self-conscious to be reading the same book as her
younger sister (not that she doesn't know). If I were tutoring two kids, I would have one write, while I read with the other one. Then switch. Then, all together, look at each girl's writing and do some revisions/editing. Maybe they could switch and use highlighters. I try to keep tutoring to the very basics: each time we read (focus on decoding and/or comprehension strategies) and each
time we write (focus on content and focus) and usually we do some word work on white boards. It sounds like your 3rd grader might really need some of this. Observe what words she struggles to write and focus on a few really common spelling patterns. Because the 2nd grader hasn't likely covered them with her teacher, she could probably gain from participating too.

I'm guessing you tutor them in their home? Do you have access to lots of books? I tutor at the library, so we spend a lot of time picking out books for the week. I see my job as a tutor as more of one that simply keeps them going throughout the rest of the week, b/c in one hour per week, you can't accomplish much. So we pick out a huge stack of book each week and I make sure that they are books that are well within their reading level so that they aren't struggling. If I were you, I would get each girl started on her own series. Maybe something like Henry and Mudge for the 3rd grader and Magic Tree House or Cam Jansen for the 2nd grader. Grab a a book from every series from the library and take them with you to your next meeting. Let them choose from their own pile of just right choices, and then go with that.
