Help!!!!! I can't attach a file!

I can't get it to work. I've never done it before. I saved them as PDF files on my computer. Then I chose the add attachments and found them and clicked upload. It took a while and then it would look like it was done, but I could not find anything loaded. I thought maybe the files were too big so I tried with a really small file. I could not get that to even finish uploading. Help!!!!
