Calendar pieces QUESTION
By Mrs.EastCoast

Clip to ScrapBook
Many moons ago, recalled by looking at some old pictures yesterday, I had the kids make the calendar pieces we use on the calendar. I can't remember why I stopped doing that.

It is great to do that, though, because
you have the opportunity to talk about monthly events and symbols for the months - I think it's such a developmental and fun way to help the kids learn!

My question is ... after brainstorming a list of pictures that can be drawn on the calendar pieces, should I just let the kids pick 2 (I have 14 kids this year coming up) that they want, or should there be more order to the process?

What I used to do was this:

Say it is September. We brainstorm the pictures that most symbolize that month: apples, school buses, happy faces for school, school supplies. Then we decide on a pattern. Do we want AB AB AB AB? ABBA ABBA ABBA? ABC ABC ABC? and then we choose the pictures to go in that order. Bus will be A, apple will be B, paints will be C.

But I remember thinking back in the day that was SO MUCH WORK and it was a pain to do it like that. That is probably why I gave it up, to be honest.

But this coming year, I want to start it up again.

Would you just let the kids pick what they want from the list, or make it mathematical w/ the patterns?

Any other ideas?

Sorry this was so long. I'm not known for being brief.

:s)
