library grand opening By BookMuncher

I teach first, so it may be different, but I think that the foundation for a good year rests on whether or not we 1) really take our time in introducing what's available and 2) building up the library like it's the greatest thing since the I-pod. (yeah, right!) I don't open my library for at least 2 weeks. I put assorted bins on their tables and each day, the bins rotate. As they rotate, the things we are working on are behaviors of a reader, what readers do if they finish, how to focus on a book and think about, and we talk about our reading lives at home and at school. In a fourth grade room, I | | would picture the bins being filled with books that you think they might be relatively familiar with. As they read everyday, I would be giving book talks and introducing the bins one at a time. (I guess since fourth graders read long books, I would probably have them going on a book of their choice since day one, but each day, I would still rotate the bins for them to preview and talk about which ones look good) I would do a count down until the opening of the library, and as it gets closer, have the kids make decorations, a "speech" (in 1st grade, it's hilarious!), and other plans. The Grand Opening of the library should come when the kids at least know what baskets are what, where they might head for first, and are chomping at the bit for the library to be open.
