I am finishing leveling my library this summer. I had it about half done during the school year. The only time I made a student read a certain level was when he kept choosing extremely hard books and was getting nothing out of them. Otherwise, I recommend a color (I have them leveled by colored dots), but they don't have to stick with that one color. Most kids are good at picking out books that are right for them.
