Not sure if it's too "out there" from your theme, but I have used and plan to use Miss Rumphius and tie in the message "You must find a way to make the world more beautiful" as a challenge/assignment for the students to find a way to make our classroom better during this year.I also have a book that is great, with lots of story suggestions. I ordered it from Barnes and Noble, it's entitled "Being Your Best - Character Building for Kids 7 - 10" by Barbara Lewis. It has chapters on citizenship and responsibility along with 8 other values.
