I have a similar system to Mel's , and it has worked very well for me in 4th grade for the last 11 years. I just can't see the point of holding on to papers longer than I need to and most parents seem to want them back more often than once a week at my school. We pass papers out to mailboxes daily and they are emptied each afternoon. We do require all tests to be signed by a parent, regardless of grade earned, and those must come back within 2 days. Tests are weighted so they have more impact than HW, so this makes sense for us, too. I now have an all-in-one printer-scanner-copier in my room, so this makes copying those assignments I want to keep a copy of a LOT easier since we're very far away from the copying machine in the staff workroom.
