journals By Kathryn Dequenne

I have used journals every year in third grade. Whether or not they are graded depends on why you use them. I have the students write for the last five minutes of each day (or as often as possible). I don't grade them. I simply take them up every so often, read and respond to an entry or two. I use them to get the children to focus on what we are doing, something they particularly enjoyed or something that may be bothering them and it is easier to write about than talk about. I don't tell them what to write about. I have found that many of them will write about things they are doing outside of school and this eliminates the need for dozens of stories in the morning.
