Centers
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
I use literacy centers about 3 days a week. While the kids are at centers I work with a small group. My group will read a story at their reading level (from anthology, a picture book, or a novel), work on fluency, practice
retelling stories, discuss/practice how to use various reading strategies like using an index and skimming for info, etc....any skill that you want to focus on in small group. The kids at centers are practicing reading and writing activities. Sometimes I might throw in a Science or Social Studies center that fits our theme, but these activities have reading and/or writing practice.
I haven't done math centers much (just haven't gotten around to making many or trying to fit it in my schedule) but third graders could certainly handle them. A good book for literacy center ideas is What are the Other Kids Doing While You Teach Small Groups by Donna Marriott. Hope this helps.
