An alternative for attendance which I use is this. I usually have a question of the day which I write on sentence strips so I can use them year after year. I clip them to the board with magnetic clips and make name tags(laminate and then put magnetic strip on the back)for the students,something not too big but big enough for me to see easily. In the past I have even used a small paper plate that they have decorated. Whatever you choose. Most questions are yes or no answers but I also give choices. Many of the question are related to the topic we are studying at the time. The children come into the classroom and move their name tag under the choices for the question. This is a quick way for me to know who is there and who is not.
