Barbara, what a coincidence, I just returned from the local teachers' store with my materials for next year. I purchased a "classroom management" pocket chart from Carson Dellosa (35 individual pockets).

I assign each
student a number, based on the alphabetical order of surnames. This number is used on all papers to facilitate grading, checking for assignments, etc.
In addition I purchased a set of monthly calendar dates from Carson Dellosa -- I chose the new "kid drawn" sailboat design. These are already numbered 1-31 and as each student arrives, part of their routine is to place their numbered

sailboat in our pocket chart. At a glance, I could see which pockets are empty -- or who is absent. At the end of the day I remove our sailboats until the next morning.

I teach first grade and this works wonderfully at this grade level.
