"3rd Grade"
By Leisel

Clip to ScrapBook
Tina,

I just finished my 1st year in 3rd grade (I've also taught 4th - and 1st grade for two years). You might be surprised at how "young" 3rd graders can be.

I also use the "card" system and it worked just fine - I
did start a complaint book though (the child would log their complaint to be discussed at a later time) to cut down on tattling.

I also passed out tickets to reward positive behavior. On the last Friday of each month another teacher and I would have "Fun Friday." Each child had to have 20 tickets to attend and we would provide a snack/treat and have different activities. Sometimes

it was as simple as an extra recess or a short video. We also mixed up bubbles and had them play with the bubbles. "Fun Friday" would usually be the last 30 minutes of the day, and my colleague and I would take turns every month being in charge of the activity. The other teacher would stay in with the children who didn't have 20 tickets (they would have to work on a big packet of work in the silent classroom). Oh, we also collected tickets for misbehavior, extra drinks or restroom breaks. I also let the kids exchange tickets to sit in my rolling chair for the day, etc.

Hope this helps!
