books my kids liked

Hi Amy.

I am just finishing my first year as a 3rd grade teacher, so I was in your position last year. I had no idea what kind of books third graders would like.

This year, I have found some favorites among my class:

**
anything by Patricia Polacco. We did an author's study about her. The kids really liked that so much of her writing is based on stuff from her real life. They like to find the connections.

** Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr. We read this as part of our social studies unit about Japan. It's the true story about a little girl who died from leukemia as a result

of the Hiroshima bombing. Heavy stuff, but the kids really liked it.

** My Name is Maria Isabel (can't remember the author). A book about a very thoughtful girl who starts a new school after moving to NYC from Puerto Rico. A Hannukah play at Maria Isabel's school figures prominently in the story, so it's good to read around the holidays.

I hope this helps! I have been amazed to see how strongly my students react to good literature they can relate to in some way. These are books I
definitely plan to use again next year.

Robin
