there are so many labels and just as many people who take offense to all the labels. We are not suppose to label anyone, but we are labeled as soon as we come out of the womb. Boy, girl, we will react and learn as one or the other.
I have one child in my room that has an aid and obvious physical and learning problems. She had been gone for quite a while from school. The children in the class were very happy to see her when she came back. They know she is a SPED student, but they don't care. They all missed her bright smile. Having a label doesn't change the person.
The children in my class go throughout the school to practice reading the last half hour of the day. (I teach a VERY low second grade) SPED is one of the more popular places to go read. The other is the alternative classroom and kindergarten is becoming very popular to go to also. Each of these rooms have a label and each of the classrooms are very welcoming to my students.
It's the adults who have trouble with labels, the children just know who and what they like.
