I would draw a smiley face on the board and write the kids names on it if they were caught being good. They were the one who got to line up first. This year, I don't even write things down. I just say I like the way so and so is doing what ever. The principal was right, when you do things for bad behavior you are reinforcing that behavior. I have always believed it's easier to catch flies with honey than vinegar, so I let the children who are doing as they should know they are doing as they should.
I was dredding this class watching them last year. The boys were bullies and the girls were catty. We have had very little of the behavior. They know I don't put up with that, and so they don't do the behaviors. I have several children who are naturally chatty, I just get them away from anyone to chat with when it gets out of hand. One of my students is not near ANYONE yet still is constantly talking. The others have learned to shut him out, so even he is not a problem.
