I always tell my first graders that when they write, they are in control of the story. It doesn't have to be true, they can use their imaginations, and I remind them that first graders have the best imaginations of anyone I know. Then we brainstorm ideas for stories, and they choose one of those ideas or use one of their own. My first graders love to write, and they love to share their stories.
