What ever happened to individualizing the program? Maybe the "guru" needs to rethink her quota. If a kid is really struggling to read - 30 pages a night is a lot. It would be great if she could achieve that, but clearly it is difficult for her and she is not comprehending what she reads. Would mom be willing to share read with her? Mom reads a page or 2 and daughter does the same. Have mom discuss what she reads with daughter. I think we need to be careful with AR and not let it guide our reading instruction. I am for anything that gets a kid to read, but I've seen AR do the opposite many times. Good luck to you. Your student is lucky to have such a compassionate teacher!
