It's the true story of the third-worst case of child abuse in California told by the child, now grown up. The mother was an alcoholic and she had three children. For some reason I don't understand, she singled out this one boy and treated the others kindly. She called him the "bad boy" or "the boy" and forced him to wear tattered (literally riddled with holes) clothing. He had to do without food for long periods of time. He was forced to do chores very quickly or he was beaten. One of the punishments I vividly remember was he had to lie naked completely submerged in freezing cold water in the bath tub for long periods of time. She would also have him clean the bathroom with ammonia and bleach (a deadly combination) with the door closed. He would soak the cloth in water to breathe through trying to survive and the mom figured it out. She would soak the cloth in the solution before leaving. One time, I think, she stabbed him.
It was really terribly awful. One of our health teachers reads it aloud to our 7th graders. She used my classroom one year and I heard it all read aloud. :(
