Not for third graders

I agree that this book is not for third graders. I taught 3rd grade for 7 years and now 6th for the past 4 years. While I did read Where the Red Fern Grows and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to my 3rd graders I think Summer of the Monkeys is best for 5th or 6th. We are just finishing up Summer next week and my 6th graders love it. It is really long and sometimes requires some explanation even with this group.

Other books I would recommend is Because of Winn Dixie, The Trumpet of the Swan (by the same author as Charlotte's Web....brain freeze I can't place the name), The Hundred Dresses, and The Hundred Penny Box. If I think of more I will let you know.
