A smile is universal. Talk slowly, you don't have to talk louder, just slower. My brother's landlady only spoke German, when I was there, when she was talking to me, I understood what she was saying although I didn't speak the language. She spoke slowly and let me get an idea of what she was talking about. When I am around other who's first language is not English, I try to remember the lady in Germany.
You might want to do your greetings the same every morning, take a few minutes to work just with him. Teach important words, bathroom, playground, lunch room, etc. Picture word cards that are often used in Kindergarten can be handy to teach the names of items. As he learns these, the congunctions, articles, and verbs will come, just watch that the verbs are in the correct forms.
As for the child coming in in the middle of they year, I think the parents are doing the right thing. If the child sits at home all day, what are they going to do? How will they make friendships, which are very important growing up. Then there is the summer. Think of all the wasted time the child would have in the summer. Vietnamese are known for how hard they work at learning. If they start to learn now, by the end of summer, much of the gap will be eliminated.
Whatever you do, smile. Know you are making a huge difference in this child's life.
