Sophie and Matilda
By Elise

Clip to ScrapBook
Our class has two guinea pigs, Sophie and Matilda (named for Roald Dahl's characters), who add such joy to our room!

They were a group who needed to be taught to care more about nurturing living things. Their empathy
and compassion finally came through for the guinea pigs.

It is so important to reinforce how crucial it is to treat these living things with great care - not being too loud, thinking about what might scare them/ease them, why they might want a large cage, etc.

Students are carefully trained as to how to clean out cage, care for guinea pigs, and they become quite independent with good

leadership.

My children are rewarded with the chance to
-read to the guinea pigs (even the most reluctant readers are pleased with this audience!),
-sit in a circle and let the guinea pigs walk around
-stay after school to hold a guinea pig

It really is worth the extra work. Somehow, pets with fur seem to be more lovable.
