Sophie and Matilda By Elise
|
|
Our class has two guinea pigs, Sophie and Matilda (named for Roald Dahl's characters), who add such joy to our room! They were a group who needed to be taught to care more about nurturing living things. Their empathy | and compassion finally came through for the guinea pigs. It is so important to reinforce how crucial it is to treat these living things with great care - not being too loud, thinking about what might scare them/ease them, why they might want a large cage, etc. Students are carefully trained as to how to clean out cage, care for guinea pigs, and they become quite independent with good | | leadership. My children are rewarded with the chance to -read to the guinea pigs (even the most reluctant readers are pleased with this audience!), -sit in a circle and let the guinea pigs walk around -stay after school to hold a guinea pig It really is worth the extra work. Somehow, pets with fur seem to be more lovable.
