Just a thought

Clip to ScrapBook
Now I'm sure I'll get some disagreement over this, but you may consider giving a significantly less amount, or not give it at all. I teach fourth grade and have struggled with this for 20 years. Over the summer I read a
book called "The Case Against Homework." When I bought the book I thought it was a resource for teachers, but instead found out it was a parent empowerment book to make a case against homework. I reluctantly read it, but by the time I finished I decided to change my approach to homework. I did not agree with everything the authors said, but they made some valid points.

This
year I have assigned very little homework. Every night students have to read for 15 minutes, and may have some flashcards or spelling words to study. On occasion they have some spelling, but I always give them plenty of time to work on it in school. I have restructured my day so that I can give the students time to complete/finish assignments.

We could debate the rationale for homework and I see both sides. BUT, the best part about my new views on homework is that I have much less to check, beg for, correct, pass out.... what a huge difference. I also don't have to listen to the pathetic excuses students give me. I don't have to wonder who did Sally's homework, either. (I still use "excuse slips" that students complete with their name, date, assignment and reason, in case an assignment is not handed in).

Fourth grade in NY State is filled with state testing. At first I was leary that my students' academics would suffer, but I don't think they have. Suzy still gets 100% and Matt still gets by with a 70%. I'm just happier. I think the parents are happier, too. There's more time for dinner, play and family time (not that everyone uses the extra time appropriately).
