Mtn. Math and Languag By mellen

I teach third grade and use it similarly. As soon as students arrive they have 15 minutes to complete 10 problems. After 15 minutes, they give their paper to their table partner to grade and I go over each problem on the board. They get their papers back and we move on. The problems are usually assigned as follows: Mon. Math #1-10 Tues. Lang. #1-10 Wed. Math #11-20 Thurs. Lang. #11-20 Fri. Math#21-24 Every couple of weeks I take a "test" in order to see how they are doing. It's frustrating to see that even after repeated practice, they still miss items that they should be getting. However, | | its usually the same students who also do poorly with other academic skills. I'm not going to stop doing the Mtn. Work because of it. I believe the spiral practice of these tested skills will help my students with the standardized testing in the spring. Even some of those who still miss items will have time to "get it" before testing. I usually see the most growth after the Christmas break. Some of them just aren't developmentally ready to master some of the skills (like rounding!). :( I know we have a lot to fit in, but I will not take away Mtn. Work. Our curriculum doesn't do enough spiraling, so this is too important!
