leave it for a later grade
By Penny

Clip to ScrapBook
As a middle school teacher, we always run into the problem of kids complaining about rereading books they've had some teacher read in the lower grades. Granted, a rereading is always worth it, but it gets irritating to get
into that conversation every time we announce what new book we'll be reading. In our district we have a list of what books get read in what years, but someone always takes a higher grade level book reguardless.

The Giver is usually read in the 8th grade. Even if you do explain everything, many kids will not get it yet and some will be completely turned off to it. It'll make
it harder when the book gets reintroduced by the future 8th grade teacher. Pick a more appropriate book and let the 8th grade teacher read it with his/her class.
