I have read The Giver to my fourth grade classes for the past 10 years and they ALWAYS love. It requires some discussion and prompts even more, but the kids love it. Give it a shot, I swear they will love it and with a teacher's guidance they will be able to understand and process the more difficult parts.

It is no worse that anything they might watch in primetime.
