I used to read The Giver but found certain scenes upsetting for some students. I found The City of Ember to be a more appropriate book for this age level. Similar to The Giver, the setting is in the future. A new society has been established that begins to fall apart. You might consider this novel instead of The Giver. It is full of suspense and makes a great read aloud.
