Running records are great! By linda2671

Not only do they show you what level your kids are reading on, but you can look at the mistakes they make in their reading and pinpoint problem areas. Before we started using guided reading and running records, I use to just use my gut to place them. That works, but this way you have documentation for parents and for preassessment should you decide a child needs extra help. Our school requires running records. The last one of the year goes in the cumulative file for next year's teacher. It helps them know where to start from the beginning of the year. Readinga-z has instructions to help you do the running records and to help interpret them.
