informal reading assessments
By Penny

Clip to ScrapBook
I really like using the San Diego Quick to get a ballpark figure as to where the kids are reading. It's a quick word list they read to you (which has an advantage since you can hear any difficulties they have sounding out words) and it gives you an Independent, Instructional, and Frustration reading level on each kid.

It may be informal and there's no comprehension involved, but it's fairly accurate and gives you a starting point. Just google for it.
