Wow...a lot to think about
By Groovy Gal

Clip to ScrapBook
Thanks everyone for your input! I conferenced with the mom and we spoke of the student's lack of spelling skills and reading challenges. Mom said others in the family, ie. uncles have poor spelling skills too. I know since
she is not showing a big discrepency with her scores she is not a candidate to be tested, as Lillian said. Lillian, I will check with our special ed dept about the writing qualification. Maryteach, I have enjoyed your posts and look forward to learning from you as I am with this topic. As for your questions, I don't know why she is guessing. I'm thinking she is rushing, or a bit
nervous, or her brain is not reading it as quick as other words and she just tries to keep her pacing. I don't know what an IRI or QRI is, perhaps my special ed teacher will know. Also have not heard of RTI. We may have these but could be named something else.
I do know that all kids will benefit from more reading practice. I know I have improved over the years since becoming a teacher. While this kid seems academically sound there's something to her spelling that bothers me and sends up a red flag.
Thank you for the discussion, pro and cons, and information. I will continue looking into your questions for more answers.
