I was serving on a grand jury, and the D.A. wanted this Pakistani man indicted. She was listing his offenses, which included the fact that he had said he was Asian under ethnicity on some government form. The D.A. said, "AND he said he was Asian," empasizing Asian. I asked, "Didn't you say he was from Pakistan?" The D.A. lit up, "Exactly! And he said he was Asian." I replied, "He is Asian. Pakistan is in Asia." She quickly responded, "Well, you know what I mean. He doesn't look Asian." I thought, huh? I asked, "Does he look Pakistani?" She lit up again, "Yes! That's what I mean." I replied, "Well, if he looks Pakistani, he must look Asian because Pakistanis are Asians." True story. I don't think most adults know geography. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. I think we teachers who have to teach it know it because we teach it.
