Definately not too hard or unrealistic. I think a word box on this by 6th is ridiculous. Most of my students know the continents, or at least most of them, but only a very few know the oceans. Only the Atlantic and Pacific. I remember having to write down all of the great lakes in 3rd grade. Sadly, yes I think in some ways we are dumbing our kids down. In other ways they learn more things and they learn a lot of them sooner but some things I think we are not pushing like we should, and geography is one of them. I was stunned that by 6th grade many of my students can't remember the state capitals (and they had a word box)!
