Continents Conundrum By CageyBee
|
| Hmm, thanks for responding with such speed and insight. The reason I asked is because I teach sixth grade now and recently asked my sixth graders to identify all seven continents and four main oceans from a world map I gave them. I told them spelling counted so be sure to doublecheck the words. Most of the children did OK, not great, but OK. I know for a fact that when I taught K we learned a song about this (some of my kids remembered it as well as the fact that the Statue of Liberty's crown has 7 spikes for the 7 continents); first grade does it as does second, third and fourth. I don't know if the children were accountable for spelling in all of the grades so that is why I used it as a pretest...a wake-up call for my kids to start paying attention to things they have already learned.
My conundrum was that the in-class support teacher thought this was too difficult a task without a word box and became snippy because I told her that was ridiculous. A pretest to know what kids knew about the continents and how to spell them didn't require a word box. Are we "dummying" kids down? I think by the age of 11 you should be able to at least spell you're own country/continent!
I just wanted to be sure I wasn't the only one who realized this is something our kids should know by sixth grade. You have shown me that I was not being too hard or unrealistic. Thanks!
