The phrase "shut up" By luv_2_teach
|
| I was so scared the first time I was called in as a sub. It was for 5th graders and the school that I taught at, my mother-in-law is the aid for the 5th graders and I have heard some stories about them....boy was I scared. Me being only 21, I did not think that the kids would really listen to me, but I gave it a try. It was fun and wonderful, that was until the classes switched. I had this boy who would not listen for anything, everytime I gave an assignment he woudl say his mommy said for him to bring it home and he did not have to do homework at school, so I told him to set there quietly then. Well, he decided that he was not going to listen and talk throughout the rest of the day. At one point in time he had the whole class talking. I even had another teacher come in and check on the class becuase it was so loud. I just lost it and told him to go to his deck, sit down, open up his book, and I did not want to hear another peep. So, he went to his desk, opened his book and yelled peep. I told him to shut up and I did not want to hear him again or he was going to go to the office. Then he told me I was in trouble for saying shut up. After I had realized what I did, I just wanted to cry, but I knew that I could not show any emotions in front of the kids. I did not mean to say it, it just happened. I then heard rumors that I could not teach anymore for saying that phrase. I talked to my mother-in-law, and she said that the teacher in that class said she was suprised I made it through the day with 5th graders and the children that were in that class, I then regained my confidence and am so much better. Words are words and they can be forgotten or they can cause trouble. I think that we are all adults and we should only say what we want our students to say. I think that it is a judgement that we should make. I know that I do not want my students to say shut up so I know now, no matter how bad the situation is, shut up is never a word that I want to use again!
