Here's a quick "hit" that teaches a good point about voting. It only takes about 5 min.

You write something like the following on the board or on small "ballots" that you've cut out:
____ subs
____spinach
____crispy
french fries

You tell the students to vote for these items using a #1 for first choice to #3 for last choice. Usually you'll notice that the students will have all ones and twos next to the sundae or the fries. AFTER all votes are tallied, explain to the students that the two items with the most votes will be completely taken off the school lunch menu for the rest of
the year and the third item will be added. You'll usually hear groans, even though they know it's not a real vote.

You can use whatever best pertains to your grade level or school (ex. #1 school dances, #2 Friday football games, #3 60 min. after school detentions), but the minilesson just tells the students that it's best for all citizens to have all the facts (ex. reading up on all issues, knowing all candidates viewpoints) before casting any votes.
