Poetry
By Suni

Clip to ScrapBook
We have a poem of the week. They are kept in a 3 ring notebook. I spend about 20 minutes on Monday introducing the poem, looking for rhymes, word families, in short any english lesson that we are working on and we highlight
these skills with yellow crayons. The poem usually ties into the story for that week. The other days we just read the poem getting the feel of the words and beat. We also change our voices and trade off reading the lines by girl boy or row - anything to make it fun. Sometime during the week we illustrate the poem on the page. On Thursday they may take their notebook home to practice
for the next day's Poet Theater. The parents are a great help and they enjoy listening to them. But this is always optional! On Friday we have Poet's Theater. They can either read or say from memory any poem. Sometimes you have to encourage them to move on to another poem but if the poem is long, I make an exception. Not everyone participates at first. That is ok. It is a big risk. I also offer a free math homework pass to those who participate. They love it and they write poetry because they are comfortable with it.
