Yes to Snacks and Water
By Bob

Clip to ScrapBook
Our entire elementary school has a policy to encourage students to bring snacks and water. Each teacher manages this his/her own way; I allow the students to choose when to snack as long as they continue with their working.
I find it gives another managable chance to stand up (to throw away trash) or to move (to get the snack from a book bag) which is important. In elementary grades, children begin to need to move every 10 minutes to "recharge" their brain. The snack adds to kinesthetic learning, including associations with taste and smell possibly, and adds to locale memory (Caine). As long as the
snacks are mostly nutritious, they help the students feel more comfortable while learning, another essential ingredient to learning (Caine). I agree with the above posters, students must keep their brain hydrated, and water also helps with overall health, which affects learning.
