2nd grade teacher x5 years
By Robin

Clip to ScrapBook
This will be my 5th year in second grade. They are a joy most of the time. They are still "little" and love their teacher. They have not started the boy/girl seperation of play yet. They like lots of hands on -- whether it's
learning new P.E. games, painting, playing language arts games, science experiments, etc. I usually get about 5-6 students reading above grade level when I get them (low level chapter books level 20-24). I have 50% of my students reading at grade level for the beginning of second grade -- book level 16-18. Some are at 12-14 levels. A few are reading lower than that. Each year is different.

I do literacy centers in the morning for 1hr to 1 1/2 hrs--and that is when I pull my reading groups. Check with your district for required reading/literature and themes that have to be taught. I focus almost all my thematic units in science or social science areas. This is especially beneficial for second language learners. E-mail if you need more or if you just need assurance that "Yes, that is typical for a second grader" type encouragement.
