In high school, I was taught that the rules had changed - no comma before "and". I returned to college in the mid 90's - I was taught that the pendulum had swung again - AND that it was best to use the comma before "and". We bought a Mechanics/Usage/Grammmar series last year. It teaches the kids to put the comma before "and".
