Spalding
By Chris

Clip to ScrapBook
I taught Spalding to first graders for 4 years. The first year I did only Spalding. My students did learn to read. I seemed to use it less and less each year. Last year I taught 2nd grade and I only used the sound cards
and sound dictation. I found that the Spelling notebooks were really tedious for the first graders. They would shut down on me. I like teaching spelling patterns better than using the Ayers list. BUT,I love the way the sounds are taught. I found that the kids and I have a common vocabulary when talking about words. When they want to know how to spell a word, I can say use the 4-letter
a. etc...

My class last year didn't need a lot of phonics. They were very good readers. If I have a low class this year, I will use Spalding more. Both of my own children learned to read from the spalding method. It does work!
