Use a calender board By Bobbitt
|
|
I use a calender board daily with my kids. We do a day count putting skinny sticks into pockets for hundreds, tens and ones (Lakeshore Grades 1,2,3). Every day we are talking about place value. Whenever someone has a problem| I remind them about the day count chart and the light goes on! You can see the kids looking at the day count board for help. I also use the Math Their Way boards and unifix cubes to teach renaming. I do the base three and base four games as shown in the book, but you can just do the base ten and accomplish the same thing. I tell the kids there are rules just like a game. One | | of the rules is that you cannot join the cubes until you get ten, and then you must move the cubes from the ones to the tens side. Another rule is that you never join more than ten together. I aslo have a third piece on my board for hundres, but we fold it back at first and use it for three-digit addition and subtraction.
