    My old school used AR, and I absolutely hated it. I felt like it trivialized reading because it was based solely on extrinsic motivation. I think I agree with everything kenworthyk stated.

    A parent at my current school kept pushing for AR because her son loved to be competitive. The principal asked my opinion since I was the only teacher with AR experience, and I explained what kenworthyk stated: no higher level thinking, focus on earning "stuff," and burnout in later grades.

    While experiences with AR probably vary depending on the school and students, I think it shifts the focus from loving reading to earning "stuff."
