Poetry Books/Book Talks
By Barb

Clip to ScrapBook
Here are two ideas for second grade.

1. Poetry Books - During the school year I do a lot with poetry. After a poem is introduced and activities are done with the poem, a copy of the poem goes in each student's pronged
poetry folder. The poem is then illustrated. We use the poetry books sometimes for partner reading. Sometimes it goes home and the student shares with the family. This makes a great keep sake from 2nd grade. Choose poems that go with your 2nd grade themes, seasons or holidays.

2. Book Talks - Each month I assign a Book Talk. These projects are done at home and presented at school

on the due date. A letter goes home each month explaining the directions for each Book Talk. I use a rubric to grade the Book Talks. Here is an example of December's Book Talk. Each student can read any book of their choice. Then they are to write a letter to Santa convincing him why he should include their book on his sleigh. During the due week, several children a day take turns reading their letters. The kids love the Book Talks and look forward to doing them each month. What I like about the Book Talk is that each student can read a book on their own level and be successful with the projects.
