I teach grade 7 and I do not use cursive, really. I sort of have a combination print/cursive style for myself, but the kids seem to be able to read it. I tell them to print of handwrite as they please, as long as it is neat and legible. I think that often they are going to be using technology (like word processing for writing assignments) and kids do spend a lot of time on MSN, so they probably don't consider it very important.
