Do you do any work with the 6 traits of writing? I use them with my grade 7 class, and I often focus on different aspects of writing in the final copy. I got post-it notes from Scholastic that list the six traits and say "This paper was marked for..." and you can check things off. So, unless I'm marking a paper for conventions, I just circle errors and move on.
I absolutely agree that this can be really irritating!
