    We count books

My class counts the number of books read. I have a short book review form (This is second grade.) It includes the title, author, favorite part, a reating, and how the book ends. I just try make sure the book has been read. If I am not sure that the book was actually read, I ask the child questions about the book. We count any book read at home or at school, other than books we read together. If a book is long, it counts as two books.

We have class goals and individual goals. We vote on incentives for the whole class. At 2,000 books we have an ice cream treat. Every 200 books up to that, we have another reward. Things such as no homework, a trip to the playground, a snack, etc. Individual rewards I select. They are things like an eraser, a pencil, a homework pass, notepad, folder, markers (bought on sale during the summer). At 350 books, there is a special prize from a prize box.

Each child gets a certificate at the end of the year indicating how many books they've read. This program is done by both second grades. The principal comes in and awards the certificates. The kids really love the whole thing!
