    I had the exact same thing happen a few years ago with my second graders. And I agree it IS way too long. I had read aloud for at least 1/2 hour,then as the year progressed they were able to have silent reading for 20-30 minutes,then we had partner reading. A snack recess break helped keep them concious,then we had math,content area stuff etc. I don't fill the afternoon with games just once in a while.It also helps if you schedule special lessons (like with foreign language interns,counselors) always on these long afternoons. If you ever use movies this is also the days to have them. Speaking of movies ~ its just not that good an idea any more. Either they watch movies constantly at home so this is old stuff OR their parents object to movies during class time. So that activity is kind of over.
