    My guess is that you have grown up calling your mother "Mum". Would it be strange to you that, upon moving to the US, you would be expected to abandon "Mum" and start addressing your mother as "Mom"? To the point that your teacher would count "Mum" as a *spelling error*?

    It sounds like a very unreasonable expectation to me. If you've moved to a new country and face thousands of small adjustments, it's the very least that your new country can do to accept your mode of address for your very own mother, isn't it?

    I promise to accept Brits' usage of "Mum" if you can be willing to accept Americans' usage of "Mom"! Well, even if you can't, Mum is okay with me!
