I think they are 2 separate words, with different pronunciations, different spellings, but the same meaning. Mum, Mom, Mommy, Mama, Ma, etc. They mean the same but are spelled & pronounced differently.
I'm in the US but have had kids form the UK. (We have lots of military personnel come from all over the world.) I've had kids use Mum in their writing and I would never even think about correcting it.
